2009-2010 Briançon: Collège Vauban 3ème

The citadel of Briançon in October 2009. Somewhere nearby a group of students from Troisième (Year 10) are meeting for one of their English conversation classes. 2009-2010 Briançon: Collège Vauban 4ème

In the photo, six 13-14 year-old demoiselles from 4ème (Year 9) enjoy a picnic in the garden of the Hotel Edelweiss while chatting in English with Pippa, their Australian teacher. A seventh student was ill, others will join shortly, so the workshop is confirmed.

They may be young but all six are lively characters; it seems certain that everyone is going to have lots of fun in the forthcoming year.

Student Visit Briançon: August 2009

Lucy was the first Troisième (Year 10) student from Chichester to visit Briançon. Both she and Manon having younger sisters, Emily was invited and enjoyed the company of Magali.

Embrun

Embrun, at 900m, has a milder climate than Briançon and Guillestre; winter snow melts faster and summer temperatures regulalry exceed 30c. A thriving market town and religious centre, Embrun life changed in 1960 when the Serre Ponçon damn was completed. Suddenly, the town overlooked France's largest inland lake which, thanks to summer sun and strong winds, rapidly became an obligatory destination for sailors and windsurfers.
Embrun is surrounded by ski-resorts and two national parks, Le Queyras and Les Ecrins, which offer all the pleasures of mountaineering, including lakeside picnics, via ferratas, mountain-biking and climbing glacier-clad peaks.

Guillestre

Guillestre is situated between Briançon to the north and Embrun to the south, at the entrance to the Queyras national park. It is linked to two major ski resorts, Vars and Risoul, and the military fortifications in nearby Mont Dauphin are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

In summer, the valleys surrounding Guillestre are very popular with white-water enthusiasts.

Briançon

Situated at nearly 1300m, Briançon is nearly as high as the summit of Ben Nevis! A Mediterranean climate, although allowing snow to settle for 5 months each winter, ensures that summer months are hot and sunny. Italy is less than 10 miles away and Turin is the nearest large city.
Briançon forms part of the Serre Chevalier ski complex; a ski-lift is situated in the town centre and anorak-clad skiers and snowboarders are common sights from December until April.
