Student exchange November 2007

The first students from Chichester to visit Briançon arrived in November 2007. They discovered the beauty of the Briançonnais mountains and the generous hospitality of the local inhabitants.

Apart from visiting Briançon and socialising with friends, the visitors, much to their amazement, were invited snowboarding at 3300m on the glacier above Les Deux Alpes.

Student Profile: Jean Baptiste

Jean Baptiste, a qualified carpenter, wanted to improve his English so he could work for an international non-governmental organisation. He joined an Alliance Anglaise 05 workshop in September 2008: his adventure was about to begin.

Student profile: Florence

Florence first visited Scotland in February 2008 , staying as au pair girl for two weeks with friends of Anthony. Having passed her bac in June 2008, she returned to Scotland in August 2009 as a guest of different friends. In exchange for free board and lodging she gave private French lessons to Brian and Janet.
Visiting Edinburgh enabled her to enquire about student jobs for next summer. Meeting Cayle and Hugo, she was introduced to Scottish student life, which included socialising in local pubs. She also attended the Edinburgh Festival.

Student profile: Manon

After her bac, having specialised in English and Spanish, Manon wanted to live in England. So she became "au pair" girl in a family with two young boys. She attended language school, obtaining a Cambridge certificate in "English as a Foreign Language". She also worked as a waitress and joined a local drama club where a slight French accent was no hindrance to performing in English.
Having been accepted to study at Portsmouth University, Manon will soon be starting a new life as an English university student.

2006-2007
Workshop for Briançon adults and pilot class at the Lycée d'Altitude (Terminale + Première).


2007-2008:
Workshops for adults at Briançon and Guillestre.
Official workshop at the Lycée d'Altitude (Terminale + Première). Internet exchanges with students at Bishop Luffa School/Chichester High School for Girls. Two Chichester students visited Briançon in Novemeber 2007, the first school visit, and 6 Briançon students visited Chichester in February 2008. Another student to Scotland as au pair for two weeks.

Welcome!

The Alliance Anglaise 05 mission is to help inhabitants of the Hautes-Alpes department communicate with the world outside France.

Local schools teach grammar and vocabulary and introduce students to anglo-saxon literature. Others teach essential English for professionals, especially important in a region dependent upon tourism.
Alliance Anglaise 05 complements these efforts. We don't teach English, we encourage students to exploit existing knowledge, permiting them to communicate in the language of globalisation. Our teachers, all anglophone, impart everyday English spiced with the culture of their country of origin.
Complementary to our conversation workshops, limited to 10-12 students for maximum efficiency, we connect students to British correspondents and incite exchange visits. We also help ex-students organise work assignments in English-speaking countries.
The French intone "Vive la difference!!". Agreed. But how much better to discover and appreciate the multitude of differences that distinguish the French from Anglophones!!
